Chapter 4

Thanksgiving for the Egan’s was a picnic out on the old river route, on a small hill perched between two mountains. It was their father who had started this ritual a long time ago, while Doug was still a student and his sister was just a little headache of a girl who wanted to tag along to all his events. He hadn’t been one for going out much, but he had been an active child right from a tender age.

The sun wasn’t so high in the sky that it would cause sunburn; it was already on its journey home and the strength of its rays was much milder than it had been earlier in the day.

Doug recalled this spot. They’d been here even before the water charted a new course for itself. He had raced up and down the sandy path, feeling the sand under his feet and loving every bit of it. Today he probably wouldn’t be running the length of the water, but he was hoping to have fun and be happy. Father had started inviting an extended family and friends only a few years ago.

As he rode down to the scene of the dinner, Doug thought about the moment he had shared with Darlene. It was clear to him that liked him. She showed it in the very little things. Maybe he was the one wasting time; maybe he should just dig in and say his bit and hope for the best. At the moment he was lost and in love. Like the fifty flowers they had looked for together earlier that day, his love was growing but he didn’t think it was time to profess his love yet. He would bide his time, wait it out and when he was ready, he would swoop in and let her know what he had felt for her all this while.

Mrs. Egan and Lori had already set up on a grassy knoll overlooking the new path of the stream on the left and the old water trail on the right. It was almost like a compromise that offered them the best of both worlds. Lori slipped to his side and laced her hand through his.

“How did it go?” she asked.

“I saw her, we had a bit of fun talking and riding but there was nothing too interesting about the meeting. It was just like one of those meetings you go to and enjoy the excitement of reconnection. It was like meeting up again after a long absence.”

“Did you enjoy yourself?” she asked.

“Yes, more than I thought I would. She’s an incredible person.”

“Mom invited Brad. His wife and little boy travelled to her mom’s place in New Jersey. He should be here anytime soon.”

“That’s great. I haven’t seen him since yesterday.”

Brad showed up a few moments later, riding his ATV over. Weston became jittery when he heard the roar of the engine. Before he could calm down, a loud roar of another engine greeted them and they all turned around to see who it was.
